What is a Fraternity

The local fraternity is the basic unit of the Secular Franciscan Order.  Local fraternity members meet at least monthly.  The members typically reside in a local geographic area or speak a common language such as Korean, Spanish or Vietnamese.  These local fraternities are assigned to one of the geographical districts or language groups depending on their location or language.  Each fraternity has an elected council consisting of a minister, vice-minister, formation director, secretary and treasurer.  The council may incluse other elected members known as councilors.  The council may appoint other members to specific tasks such as historian or database manager as needed.  Elected terms are for three years.  Local fraternities are assisted by a Spiritual Assistant who is a link with the First Orders and TOR.
